A Long Time

It has been a long time since I’ve updated my blog. Time has passed, some days going by quickly, while some passes slowly. I have now completed my journey through A-Levels. Now, I seek experience in the working field. I have gotten myself a job at Machines, selling Apple products.

This job is challenging, tiring, yet fun. I have learned many things while working here, even if only a few days have passed. I value my time here, and look forward to continue my transition from a pre-university student to a full-fledge university student.

Taylors Law School semester begins in October, and I plan to work till then. Apart from the working experience which I gain while working, I look forward everyday to seeing her* for lunch. While an hour might be short, it beats only getting to see her once a week.

Random Stuff.

Ever felt bored out of your soul to the point where you do nothing but Google random stuff? Well I did that, and came across this interesting(though not a new concept) browser game. Enter Freesky Online. This game requires loads of patience. The aim is to build up an empire from scratch. There are 4 factions to choose from, and from there on, players start with a small town. Building requires a time span ranging from 5 minutes. The tutorial was wordy, but explained the basics of the game. Basically, this is one game which is easy to play, and only needs a minimum of 10 minutes a day to keep your game up and running smoothly. =) Great for people who do not enjoy hardcore gaming and yet want to fill their time with something.

On the other note, I am REALLY REALLY looking forward to this Saturday. Why? It's because I'm going out with her*. <333333 We only get to see each other once a week or so... BUT! Saturday also means the 27th! It is our monthversary! The FIRST that we can actually spend together! WOOT! LOVE YOU DAR! Muahx!

Things I Must Do

2) At least 100 pushups and crunches per day and work towards doing 100 straight pushups.

As I am writing this now, the TM workers are over at my place setting up the HSBB (High Speed Broadband) installation. Being one of the selected to try out the new product for free until the end of April 2010, I am anxious and can't wait until the work is done.

Installation includes drilling, pulling the fibre cable from the pole outside into the house, and setting up the network. However, the workers are sure taking their sweet time > < Not that I mind, as long as the job gets done and well. =)

More pictures will be uploaded later on when I get the time. My mom is currently on my Notebook and I'm forced to use my old Pentium 4 PC which thank god still functions well.

Upon completion, I shall run a full test on speedtest.net and various other websites including testing out direct download speeds from servers around the world to check on how effective this product is. Pricing cannot be confirmed as of yet as TM Net has yet to release the pricing for this product. Compared to other Asian countries like Japan and South Korea, a 20Mbps connection might be something of a relic of the past. However, note that I am comparing it to previous network speeds in Malaysia which only ranged from 512kbps to 4 Mbps at most. This is a vast improvement.

Panda Cloud Antivirus FREE edition

After giving my PC a rest by uninstalling all protection modules and leaving it just the way it is, unprotected, I decided to give the new concept of an AV product a spin. Enter Panda Cloud AV. A free, lightweight AV product.

Now, how often is it that people such as you and me preferred to let the AV itself do the protecting without having to spend the hassle of looking after it and tweaking the settings? Now, this is where Panda Cloud AV shines. Being a cloud-based AV, all signatures are stored in a 'cloud', thus requiring you to have a stable internet connection. Fear not, however, for Panda claims to have 'offline signatures' stored, thus leaving the AV steady even in times of a 'internet blackout'.

Note that Panda Cloud is extremely lightweight. I say so because using it on my notebook, I hardly noticed any increase in RAM usage. My notebook has these specs: 2.27 Ghz P8400 dual core processor, 4GB ram with 3GB usable, and a Windows 7 OS. With Windows 7 running idle without an AV, ram usage is about 19% or less. WITH Panda Cloud, however, I only noticed a 2% or so increase in Ram usage during idle periods, which is... remarkably good.

Resource- usage aside, Panda Cloud is also extremely suitable for the average user. With an easy interface, one virtually needs not worry bout it at all after installing it.
As one can see, the interface is very simple, if the Status shows Green, you're safe. Otherwise, the AV will handle all other problems on it's own.

That aside, I could run Panda AV alongside resource heavy games like Dragon Age without any significant slowdowns, making it a good AV for gamers who do not want their gaming interrupted. =)

One minor problem was that Panda Cloud required an account, and the site was down the first time I tried it out. Thereafter, it will auto login and run, making everything easy =).

Dragon Age: Origins

Got this game!!!! It.. is... simply... AWESOME!!!! With tons of Downloadable Content, gameplay that extends easily over 100 hours, what more could one ask for? The storyline is pretty good too!.

One note though, please DO apply patch 1.02a from Bioware, or your gameplay will seriously be hard if you're playing on Easy and Normal mode.. For some reasons, these 2 modes don't make your life easy at all. =) The patch fixes this though.

A day out with Family

30th Dec 09
Went out with parents to One Utama to catch 2 movies. It was a Wednesday, so movie tickets were cheap. =)

These are the movies we watched : Avatar and Treasure Hunter.

What can I say? For a 2 and a half hour long movie, Avatar was just plain awesome. Sure I'm not the kind that sits through long movies, but for some reason Avatar just kept me hooked. I'd rather appreciate it though, if there were English subtitles for the alien tongue instead of Malay subs in a fanciful font.. To make it worst, they even used short forms of Malay! Its a cinema.. you can't expect there to only be people of one race there. =.= god.. Malaysia.. *rolls eyes*.

Anyway, the storyline is pretty much a modernized and futuristic version of Pocahontas. Soldier(in this case, ex-Marine) meets native, falls in love, and poof! Guess who's side he takes! *grins* But, that's not the main reason you should watch this show for. =) There are many reasons why you SHOULD catch it. For one, the CG used to create the lush world of Pandora is just.. awesome.. what can I say? Breathtaking. Absolutely.. For another, the movie brings us to realize how important nature is to the Human Race and that we're making a great mistake in mowing down all those green forests just to make way for modernization. Oh well, we've heard this one before haven't we? =) OH YEAH! FOR ONE! THEY DID NOT CENSOR NA'VI KISSING NA'VI! WOOT! xD for once! I SEE PROGRESS IN MALAYSIAN CENSORSHIP!

Acting: 9/10
Storyline: 7/10(pretty unoriginal, though new ideas make it a +2)
Moneys-Worth: 10/10 (other than the butt ache you get after that)

Now.. TREASURE HUNTER!... what can I say? fail... tsk tsk.. absolutely fail... Do NOT even bother catching this movie.. Not unless it is a downloaded copy(sorry Jay Chou) or a pirated one.. it is NOT worth your money... honestly... I ought to demand a refund... stone acting, a plot that hardly presents itself, and an empty cinema? Wow... However, I did get my laugh though.. for one, my dad told me that a bunch of youngsters were behind him, and this was fairly much their convo...

MAJOR UPDATE

It is a great day today.

Rephrase.. It WAS suppose to be a great day today.. But, for some reason, I just couldn't feel the essence of joy for today.

To start it off, my mom and dad dragged my butt to FRIM(for those of you who do not know, it is a forest reserve) in the wee hours of the morning, where I zombie-ed through the forest for an hour or so. I'm telling ya, ever saw the zombies in Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil? You'd think I was one if you saw me there.

By the end of it, I was aching all over. Having reached home in one piece, I proceeded to making plans for the day.. Well.. I remembered to wish her* a happy month-versary, as she put it. Yep, it is precisely a month since I 'proposed' and officiated our relationship. =)

We had originally planned to meet on New Years.. After making plans for Mid Valley, and for 2 movies at Signature, the Gardens, we were all itching and aching for that day to come.

However, it has always been said that good things are usually too good to be true. Today, it showed itself to us in full form. First, her* close friend, El, asked for a meet on the 30th of Dec, which was a day before she went back to the UK. Thus, me being the gentleman*sarcastic* told her* to prioritize THAT over our date. =)

It has also been said that fate is often fair in the dark kinda way. Fair how? Well, her mom told her no to both. =) I suppose you can say that it is interesting how things work up there in the board meetings of Heaven, where they decide that is should be so. Hmph.

I HAD plans for that day, mind you, and I was terribly upset about it, though I was also happy that if she got to meet up with El, she'd be happier.. Oh well, I can't do anything about it, and neither can she.... Sorry my love, for today

The Stress Release

Having all the negative feelings for not being able to meet her*, I went to bed... BUT ended up not being able to sleep. So, I decided to make full use of the time! How? I tested various Mods in Left 4 Dead 2! What more fun than to blast apart zombies and watch their guts and innards fly? xD

Ok boys, here are the mods I used:

Survivor AI Pounced fix
Bulldozer certificate

Basically the first 2 are modding the scripts to cause smoker and boomer deaths to dish out minor damage if the Survivors are within the vicinity. The 3rd, is a script to fix the Survivor bots to SHOOT the Smoker if the hooked friend is too far away to shove and rescue. It is a good fix, as Survivor AI without it will run towards you to save you even if you have been pulled far far away.. And that is NOT a good thing..

The 4th fixes bugs where Charger stops pounding you after you have been incapacitated. 5th allows modding max ammo cap. 6th is a fun mod to allow weapon packages. 7th is the most interesting feature, allowing you to BUY weapons with points earned by killing mobs.

I'm sorry to the people who joined my game today... The notice already stated that it was a test game to test out new mods... It was fun while it lasted though =).

Of Microwaves and Bento

My parents went out for some dinner with friends. I had to heat up the old Bento from Isetan for dinner. Well, I poured it out onto a plate, added some more chicken, and placed it into the Microwave... BUT... BUT!

I put it to 10 minutes.... ouch..... OUCH>....< ... The whole thing was semi-nearly-fried... Sigh... Oh, did I forget to mention I found this 'leaf' which turns out to be PLASTIC deco? What the fug? WHO PUTS PLASTIC LEAF DECO INTO A MICROWAVEABLE BENTO BOX ? ARE YOU FUGGING NUTS?

Oh well, I can't die yet though.. I still have eternity to live with her*. Sorry folks who want me dead =D. The time has not come... Wait another.... eternal years? =)

Review: Honey and Clover

Before reading, please note that I am not a hardcore anime addict. This is for people who are just looking for something to watch, yet do not know where to begin. Titles here might be old, but if you're in need for something to grab, check it out. )

Honey and Clover( Season 1 and 2)
This anime was aired in 2005. It falls under the categories of Slice of Life and Romance, with a dose of Comedy.

The first thing you will feel when you begin watching this is how nostalgic college-days will seem for those of you who have long graduated from college. For those of you who have yet to experience college days, this will be somewhat or rather how it'll be like.

It is hard to say who the main character is in this anime, as even though it is obvious it revolves around the life of Takemoto Yuuta, an Art student, the other people around him are vivaciously portrayed too, and thus leads to the viewer connecting to each and everyone of the characters.

Take Morita Shinobu for example. He is the typical college kid who does not seem to grow up in terms of maturity. Yet, he displays talent in many ways, and this earns him money where the others can't.

This anime will bring about many emotions in the viewer. We learn the great lesson that no matter what the obstacle, we just have to continue peddling on the bike, and when the chains break, we just have to continue pushing it.

It is hard to describe this anime in words. However, the ending of the second season might be nice for some, yet a disappointment to others. At the end of the day, it is up to you to decide!

Review: Microsoft Security Essentials

With the coming of the highly anticipated Windows 7, which is the next best thing to come from Microsoft after the not-so-well-received Vista OS, we see the release of an Anti-virus from Microsoft as well.

Unlike it's previous One Care solution, which was touted to be overly bloated, Microsoft's new security program, MSE, makes do without all the additional features that make a product more functional, but resource-hogging. Thus, what we get is a light-weight, fast, secure and user-friendly program that helps boost your PC security for a sense of security.

The system I'm using to review MSE is a Core2Duo Intel 2.27 Ghz notebook, with 4GB Ram and Vista Home Premium service pack 2 installed. The installation process was fast, only taking under 60 seconds. However, please note that users need to have a validated copy of Windows in order to install MSE. The installer can be downloaded here:
Security Essentials

As shown above, Microsoft acknowledges that most home-users of Windows are more concerned about daily everyday work than bothering about tweaking the settings of a security program. Thus, MSE boasts an extremely easy to understand interface. With only 4 tabs upon opening, one does not need to look far before understanding how to use it. When the Green is on, its a go, you're secured. If it is Red, follow the recommendations to correct it.

Remember that the key areas we look for in MSE is speed, and that is what we see.

The quick scan option scanned my system in a flat-out 30 seconds, and can either be longer or shorter depending on the amount of Memory the system is using at that time. The full scan, however, took a disappointing 100 minutes or so to complete, which was a let-down considering the quick scan was blazing fast. However, do note that this might be because MSE is thoroughly checking through the system.

One amazing thing about MSE was that when running the full scan, I was able to play games such as Call of Duty 4 on High detail without any considerably obvious slowdowns, which was surprising. Other previous competitors which I've tried all slowed down the system, even if for a little, which caused the game to run below expectations.

The third scan option is the Custom Scan. Please do note that by Custom, they mean that you can select areas in which you want to scan. It does not allow you to select the type of files you want scanned. This is somewhat a letdown. However, it has to be remembered that average home users will not be concerned as long as they're protected.

The program has a standard auto update feature(once a day if I'm not mistaken). Should you find that not enough to satisfy your sense of security, you can opt to force update it via the Update tab. Updates are fast and simple to initiate, with just a click of a button.

The third tab is the History tab, which allows you to see what threats have been discovered before, and what action has been taken against them. There is one unique thing about MSE though, it does not allow you to check previous scan logs. This is a high point for people who want a simple and easy program.

Finally there is the Settings. One does not need to touch this tab at all, as most of the basic settings have already been set for the user. Considering the fact that MSE is a lightweight antivirus solution, this is a highpoint. While remaining not highly customizable, MSE will attract users through the fact that it is free and it is extremely easy to use.

All in all, MSE is generally a good entry point for users seeking for a Security function to add into their systems. Fast, easy to use, and a 'install and forget' program makes MSE a good choice for all. With a detection rate of 97.8% (as stated by PC World), this is obviously a sizable weapon against Viruses.

Note: Upon installing MSE, some users might find that Windows Defender has been deactivated. It is normal. MSE has all the features of WD and more.
